TOPIC
Cast Iron VE Considerations

Description:

This presentation examines the practical and technical considerations design engineers should evaluate before accepting a value engineering (VE) proposal to substitute cast iron plumbing systems with PVC. While PVC can appear cost-effective as a material, this session explores factors that are often overlooked, including installation complexity, soil and bedding requirements, hanger spacing, firestopping, and code compliance. Through real-world examples and cost analyses, attendees will learn how these factors can impact system performance, safety, and long-term value. The goal is to equip engineers with the knowledge to critically evaluate VE proposals and understand the implications of material selection.
